Learning in the time of COVID-19

It’s week 3(ish) into quarantine and we’re running out of things to do. We’ve played our fair share of family Monopoly. We’ve already cleaned out every pesky cabinet in the house. And we’ve watched Tiger King. Now what? Why not learn a new skill?

The key to quarantine is finding balance. That means enjoying the extra time with your loved ones. It also means being productive each day. Maintaining productivity helps make meaning for ourselves.

But what does it mean to be “productive” if you’ve been laid off from your job or have been forced to work reduced hours?  We suggest using this time to learn 1-2 new skills that will either boost your resume, or make you happy. If you’ve always wanted to take a course at your local community college, now’s the time!

Don’t know where to start? Look no further. Below is a list of webinars/e-learning tools that we recommend.

Coursera

Coursera offers a range of free courses so everyone can keep learning despite schools closing. They have courses that will build your tech skills, and help with career development. Browse through their course selection to see what you can learn today.

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning has a variety of courses for you. Some are geared toward this time specifically like “finding a job during challenging economic times”, while others are more transferrable for later. Some of our favorites include

    1. Google Analytics
    2. Garage Band Podcasts
    3. Digital Marketing
    4. Graphic Design

Learn a language

Always wanted to learn French? Now you can with BBC Languages.

The University of Texas also offers a Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning. Find out more here.

As we mentioned, quarantine isn’t about maximizing every second of every day to be productive. It’s about balance. We hope that these tools help you learn something new. We hope these resources give you a sense of accomplishment. But don’t forget to also enjoy the time you have with those around you. Best of both worlds? Take one of these courses together!
